So You Think You Know Me?
Art Exhibition By Sumaira Isaacs | Celebrating Women Who Cover
Artist’s statement
Perceptions objectify women who cover as symbols of repression – I beg to differ. Born in Pakistan, raised in Middle East, and being an accidental Canadian, I have an instant connection with women who cover, even though the paradox as a Muslim woman myself, I have never covered.
However, my deeper connection of this ‘veiled’ world comes, from being exposed to many of the inner circles of friends and colleagues who cover, by going to school, and even growing up or being part of their families.
Whilst the popular notion, or the western (often media spread) perception objectifies them as symbols of repression and assumes that their lives have been subordinated to men and social restrictions. This may be true and unfortunate for many, can be the exact opposite for many. And it’s that ‘Untold story’ I want to tell!
