Abdul Jabbar

Landscapes have been a central focus of Abdul Jabbar’s artistic journey from the very beginning. He initially explored the visual and emotional depth of urban slums, rendering them on both canvas and jute. While these works captured the textures of lived realities, he felt a conceptual element was missing—something that could connect human existence, movement, and time.

This led him to introduce railway tracks and stations into his compositions—powerful symbols of history, migration, and continuity in Pakistan. For Abdul Jabbar, railways are not merely a mode of transport; they are a living archive of collective memory. His recent body of work focuses on historic steam locomotives from the early years of Pakistan Railways. To develop this series, he travelled extensively across the country, observing railway platforms, tracks, and trains firsthand, absorbing their atmosphere and translating their character into paint.

The recurring presence of trains in his work carries a philosophical dimension. The sound of a train whistle, signaling departure, becomes a metaphor for life’s transitions—reminding us to move forward with peace and acceptance. He views life as a journey rather than a fixed destination, much like a railway platform where people arrive, wait, and depart. Through this imagery, he reflects on patience, time, and the inevitability of change, encouraging viewers to embrace the process of waiting and growth.

Abdul Jabbar’s work merges landscape, social narrative, and symbolism, transforming familiar railway imagery into contemplative visual poetry about life, movement, and human experience.
