Artist Statement
Imran Ahmad’s work is deeply rooted in the exploration of language as a fundamental element of both personal and national identity. He approaches language not merely as a tool of communication but as a powerful symbol of cultural belonging, social empowerment, and historical continuity. Within the context of Pakistan’s rich linguistic diversity, his practice reflects on how language shapes identity and connects individuals to their heritage.
A central concern in his work is the gradual decline of regional languages. He observes that while Urdu serves as a unifying national language, it has contributed to the marginalization of many regional languages—some now facing extinction. At the same time, he highlights a parallel shift in which Urdu itself is increasingly overshadowed by English in domains such as education, media, and social hierarchy.
Imran extends this discourse beyond spoken language to include its visual and written forms. He emphasizes the cultural significance of typographic traditions, particularly the Lahore Nastaliq script, which stands as an important marker of national identity in Pakistan. His work reflects on how even these visual languages are subject to change, erosion, and possible loss.
In terms of medium and process, Imran employs clay to construct words and textual forms, placing strong emphasis on materiality and craftsmanship. The tactile process of shaping language into physical form serves as a metaphor for the historical cultivation of linguistic traditions—carefully formed over time, yet vulnerable to neglect.
Through his practice, Imran Ahmad invites viewers to reflect on the fragile state of linguistic and cultural heritage, urging a renewed awareness and responsibility toward its preservation before it gradually disappears.
