Iqbal Hussain is one of Pakistan’s most prominent contemporary artists, widely recognized for his deeply expressive figurative and landscape paintings that document the cultural and social realities of Lahore. A graduate of the National College of Arts Lahore in 1974, he later remained associated with the institution as a faculty member, contributing to the development of generations of young artists.
Hussain held his first solo exhibition at the Lahore Arts Council in 1981 and has since maintained an active exhibition career, earning recognition and awards in national art circles. His work spans both figurative and landscape genres, capturing the evolving narrative of Lahore with a distinctive personal perspective.
Central to Hussain’s practice is his poignant portrayal of the dancers and musicians of Lahore’s old walled city. Through his paintings, he goes beyond surface glamour to reveal the underlying realities of hardship, marginalization, and resilience. His work reflects a commitment to storytelling, offering an unfiltered and often stark insight into lives that exist on the fringes of society.
In addition to his figurative work, Hussain’s landscapes celebrate the historic and architectural beauty of Lahore. He is also the patron of the well-known restaurant Cooco’s Den, which overlooks the iconic Badshahi Mosque. This space has become closely associated with his artistic identity, where he is often seen painting the changing moods and seasons of the historic surroundings.
With a career spanning nearly five decades, Iqbal Hussain has remained dedicated to painting as both a personal and social expression. His work stands as a powerful reflection of human experience—capturing beauty, struggle, and the complexities of life with honesty and emotional depth.
